Science: Profiles under Consultation
The ACB Scientific Committee has commissioned proposals for standardised test order sets from members with expertise in the clinical biochemistry of renal function, bone metabolism, liver function and thyroid function
The aim of the exercise is to define order sets that:
- Assist accurate and meaningful comparisons to be made between laboratories for costing and workload in line with the Carter report recommendations
- Inform and assist the development of NHS information systems such as Lorenzo
- Achieve a consensus to enable laboratories to adopt common order sets
A second aim is to issue guidance for the time interval that should elapse before a test is repeated to minimise the wastage of resources.
The specific remit given to the authors was:

- To make recommendations as to what tests should be provided when requests are made of a laboratory for “Renal Function Tests” ( aka “Urea and Electrolytes” U&Es); “Liver Function Tests”( LFTs); “Bone Profile” ( aka “Calcium Profile”( Ca++) and “Thyroid Function Tests”(TFTs) .
- To issue guidance for the time interval that should elapse before a test is repeated to minimise the wastage of resources.
The process of achieving Consensus
The recommendations will be circulated to ACB Council for comment and posted on the ACB mail-base for comment by the general membership. The consultation period will be limited to 4 weeks. The original authors will consider the comments received and revise their recommendations if they deem it fit to do so. It is envisaged that these recommendations will be endorsed by the Executive of the ACB prior to the Chair and Secretary of the Scientific Committee sending the recommendations to various appropriate bodies such as The RCGP for comment. The original authors will consider the comments received and come forward with their final recommendations.
